Zen, Gold & Geiko

Explore Kyoto's most iconic landmarks in the northern hills. This journey combines the dazzling Golden Pavilion with serene Zen temples and the famous rock garden of Ryoanji—a perfect introduction to Kyoto's spiritual and aesthetic treasures.
Who it suits
Anyone who wants Kyoto's classics: golden temples, Zen gardens and a live geisha performance.
Highlights
The Golden Pavilion Kinkaku-ji, the rock garden at Ryoan-ji, Ninna-ji and a geisha dance in Kamishichiken.
Local flavors
Kyoto-style tofu and vegetarian temple cuisine at a local restaurant between the temples.

Kyoto Station
5 minWe meet at Kyoto Station in the morning and head straight out so we can reach our first destination ahead of the main crowds. We will have plenty of time to admire Hiroshi Hara's futuristic station building when we return in the afternoon.

Ninnaji Temple
45 minA UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its late-blooming cherry blossoms and elegant five-story pagoda. The temple was traditionally headed by imperial princes, giving it an aristocratic atmosphere. The Omuro Palace gardens are particularly beautiful.

Ryoanji Temple
45 minHome to Japan's most famous Zen rock garden—fifteen stones arranged on raked white gravel in a design whose meaning has puzzled visitors for 500 years. We sit on the viewing platform to contemplate its mysteries. The temple also features a beautiful pond garden from an earlier era.

Lunch at Local Restaurant
1 hourEnjoy lunch at a traditional restaurant near Ryoanji. Options include shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine), yudofu (tofu hot pot), or classic Kyoto home cooking.

Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion)
1 hourKyoto's most famous sight—a Zen temple whose top two floors are covered entirely in gold leaf, perfectly reflected in the mirror pond below. Originally built as a shogun's retirement villa, the pavilion has a dramatic history that I will share, including its destruction by an obsessed monk in 1950 and meticulous reconstruction.

Kamishichiken Geisha Performance
1.5 hoursExperience an authentic geisha performance in Kamishichiken—Kyoto's oldest and most exclusive geisha district, dating back to the Muromachi period. Located near the northern temples, this intimate hanamachi (flower town) maintains the most traditional atmosphere of all Kyoto's geisha quarters. We watch maiko and geiko perform classical dances and music in an elegant ochaya (teahouse) setting. Note: Maiko and geiko performances in Kamishichiken or Gion require advance booking and are arranged according to seasonal availability.

Kyoto Station
Our exploration concludes at Kyoto Station. From the golden splendor of Kinkaku-ji to the Zen mysteries of Ryoanji and the elegant traditions of Kamishichiken's geisha, this journey captures both the spiritual and cultural treasures of Kyoto's northern hills.
