Our Nara adventure begins at JR Nara Station. The first deer often appear within minutes of leaving the station!

    Kofuku-ji Temple & Five-Story Pagoda

    Kofuku-ji Temple & Five-Story Pagoda

    45 min

On the way from the station to Nara Park we walk straight through the grounds of Kofuku-ji, founded in 710 and once among Japan's most powerful temples. Its five-story pagoda, about 50 meters tall, is one of the great symbols of Nara, and the temple's treasure hall holds some of the country's finest Buddhist sculpture.

    Isuien Garden

    Isuien Garden

    45 min

A few minutes beyond Kofuku-ji lies one of Nara's most beautiful gardens, cleverly designed to 'borrow' the scenery of Todai-ji and the surrounding mountains. The two-part garden represents different eras of Japanese garden design, a tranquil introduction before the crowds build at the temples.

    Todai-ji Temple

    Todai-ji Temple

    1 hour

One of Japan's most impressive temples, housing the world's largest bronze Buddha statue (15 meters tall) in one of the world's largest wooden buildings. Entering the Great Buddha Hall is a humbling experience. I will share the history of this 8th-century marvel and point out fascinating details.

    Nigatsu-do Hall

    Nigatsu-do Hall

    30 min

Climb to this hillside hall for panoramic views over Nara Park and the Great Buddha Hall below. The covered veranda is particularly atmospheric, and the temple is famous for its ancient fire festival in March.

    Lunch in Naramachi

    Lunch in Naramachi

    1 hour

At midday we head down for lunch in Naramachi, the atmospheric old merchant quarter of wooden townhouses, tucked-away cafés and craft shops. Nara specialties include kakinoha-zushi (sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves) and local sake from ancient breweries.

    Kasuga Taisha Shrine

    Kasuga Taisha Shrine

    45 min

Nara's most celebrated shrine, famous for its thousands of stone and bronze lanterns donated by worshippers over the centuries. The approach through the forest, lined with moss-covered lanterns, is enchanting. Deer often rest peacefully along the path.

    Nara Park & Deer

    Nara Park & Deer

    30 min

Over 1,000 deer roam freely in this vast park, protected as national treasures and considered sacred messengers of the Shinto gods. We purchase deer crackers (shika senbei) to feed them—they often bow politely in thanks! I will explain the legends behind these gentle creatures.
