Highlights
The old shopping street Yanaka Ginza, Ueno Park, the torii tunnel at Nezu Shrine and Rikugien garden.
Local flavors
Yanaka Ginza's famous menchi-katsu and croquettes, plus a calm local lunch.

Nippori Station (JR)
The journey begins at JR Nippori Station, gateway to one of Tokyo's most atmospheric neighborhoods. This area miraculously survived both the 1923 earthquake and World War II bombings, preserving its Edo-era character.

Yanaka Ginza Shopping Street
45 minA nostalgic shopping street frozen in time, where family-run shops sell traditional crafts, fresh croquettes, and cat-themed souvenirs. We browse handmade goods, sample street food, and soak in the shitamachi (old downtown) atmosphere that has largely vanished from modern Tokyo.

Nezu Shrine
45 minOne of Tokyo's oldest and most beautiful Shinto shrines, famous for its tunnel of vermilion torii gates reminiscent of Fushimi Inari, but without the crowds. In spring, the hillside azalea garden explodes with 3,000 bushes in 100 varieties. The tranquil grounds and stunning architecture make this a photographer's paradise.

Ueno Park
45 minTokyo's most beloved public park, where traditional Japan meets everyday life. We stroll past the iconic Saigo Takamori statue, through paths lined with ancient temples, and around Shinobazu Pond with its lotus flowers. In spring, this is one of Tokyo's most famous hanami spots—in any season, it offers a glimpse of how Tokyoites have relaxed for generations.

Lunch in Okachimachi
1 hourThe bustling streets around Okachimachi Station hide countless local eateries. We enjoy lunch at a neighborhood favorite—perhaps a hearty tonkatsu, fresh sushi at a standing counter, or warming ramen in a tiny shop where regulars gather. This is everyday Tokyo dining at its finest.

Rikugien Garden
1.5 hoursConsidered Tokyo's most beautiful traditional garden, Rikugien was created by a feudal lord in 1702 and recreates 88 scenes from classical Japanese poetry. We stroll around the central pond, cross arched bridges, and pause at the teahouse for matcha overlooking the water. The weeping cherry tree near the entrance is legendary during spring.

Sugamo Jizo-dori & Sugamo Station
30 minOur journey through old Tokyo concludes at Sugamo Jizo-dori, known affectionately as 'Grandma's Harajuku.' This charming shopping street caters to Tokyo's elderly with traditional sweets, red underwear said to bring good health, and the famous Togenuki Jizo temple where visitors wash a statue to heal ailments. A heartwarming finale that captures the intimate, unhurried Tokyo we explored today. Sugamo Station offers easy connections throughout the city.
