Tokyo Highlights in One Day

If you only have one guided day in Tokyo and want to see the city's greatest icons without getting bogged down in complex subway transfers, this tour connects old-world Edo in the east with hypermodern Tokyo in the west. We kick off at the city's oldest temple in Asakusa, taste our way through Tsukiji's market lanes, and then head west to Meiji Shrine's serene forest, Harajuku's youth culture, and the glowing neon of Shibuya's world-famous crossing.

Asakusa Station
5 minWe meet in the morning at Asakusa Station to explore Tokyo's oldest temple district before the biggest crowds arrive.

Kaminarimon Gate & Nakamise
30 minWe pass beneath the famous Thunder Gate with its 1,500-pound red paper lantern and stroll along the historic Nakamise shopping street, lined with traditional crafts and freshly baked ningyo-yaki cakes.

Senso-ji Temple
45 minTokyo's oldest Buddhist temple dates back to 628 AD. We experience the incense burner before the main hall, draw a paper fortune (omikuji), and admire the five-story pagoda as I share how the city grew around the Sumida River.

Tsukiji Outer Market & Sushi Lunch
1 hour 30 minWe dive straight into Tokyo's culinary hub among 400 market stalls filled with Japanese chef's knives, dried bonito flakes, and piping-hot tamagoyaki omelets. Here, we stop for lunch – either at a classic sushi counter or by grazing our way through the alleys.

Meiji Shrine (Meiji Jingu)
1 hourLeaving the bustle of the market behind, we step into a lush 170-acre forest of century-old evergreen trees. Passing beneath towering cypress torii gates, we visit Tokyo's most important Shinto shrine, where we might even catch a glimpse of a traditional Shinto wedding procession.

Harajuku, Takeshita Street & Omotesando
1 hourWe emerge from the serene woods straight into Tokyo's youth culture along vibrant Takeshita Street, packed with crepe stands and quirky fashion boutiques, before strolling down the tree-lined architectural avenue of Omotesando.

Cat Street & Miyashita Park
40 minWe follow pedestrian Cat Street – a cool corridor of independent designers and cozy cafes – and continue across the lush rooftop green space of Miyashita Park right into the heart of Shibuya.

Hachiko Statue & Shibuya Crossing
45 minAs dusk falls and the neon signs ignite, we reach the statue of loyal dog Hachiko and the world's busiest pedestrian scramble, where up to 3,000 people cross at once. We take in the spectacle both from above and right from the middle of the crowd.

Shibuya Station
5 minOur full-day journey across Tokyo's contrasting worlds wraps up at Shibuya Station, offering easy transit back to your hotel or onward into the evening's dining districts.
